For this project, my goals are to incorporate the shape of my base into the meaning, as well as unity. So far, I have been working on building the base, which is shaped like an eye. The theme I am going for with this piece is focus, and I want to include sea urchins as a continuation of the invasive species route.
First, I built the base out of cardboard (image 1), This is where I get the sculptural shape and some of the rocky texture. Then I paper-mache the structure (image 2) to smooth it out and bind together all of the cardboard. From there, I make a mixture of sand, glue, Mod Podge, and paint, and spread it over the paper-mache (image 3). Once this dries (image 4), it has a rocky texture and is a dark base color. Then I painted it in different shades of grey and brown to give it more depth (image 5). Once its dry, I seal it with a layer of matte Mod Podge.
My next steps for this project involve crochet and clay. I need to crochet lots of seagrass and coral to create the ecosystem on the rock. I am going to use clay and wires to sculpt a couple of sea urchins, which I plan to paint pink, purple, and blue to go for a more cohesive color scheme.
